Do you consistently get reminders from your computer telling you to update the operating system or update your I Tunes program or update photo storage? We even get notices to update our iPhone operating system which led me to ask an Apple Genius (yes that’s what they call the tech helpers at an Apple store) why? Why do I need to update a phone, isn’t it smart enough already as it comes from the factory? Of course my Genius would explain the error of my judgement by saying, “Yes, I can see how you’d think that way, but these are sophisticated systems that interact with other sophisticated systems and as they get better and functionally improve, they need to be updated with the latest information in order to work well with all the other programing and systems.” Now that makes sense. In fact I realized we as human beings are the same way. And it’s a perfect explanation to someone who asks, “why do we need to have continual team and leadership development, we did some of that last year?” Our brains are an organic computer and need updating just like our mechanical computers. Having a team building exercise once does not connect your work team forever. It’s like saying, “Hey, I brushed my teeth this morning, why do I need to brush them tonight?” Well brushing a minimum twice a day seems self-explanatory, that should answer the previous statement of why do we need to do a team building program regularly? Because it’s needed! Lessons learned and experienced by a well-produced, interactive team building exercise can boost your team’s enthusiasm, illustrate what world-class collaboration looks like and bonds a group together like nothing else. These are all ingredients to increased production, better quality results and a better bottom line. Just make sure your team building exercise is conducted by a professional trainer skilled in the area of team building facilitation. And make sure that their team experience includes a real result that’s not contrived and contributes to the take-away message.
